FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19

1-5 PM

Location: Western Front

A massive shop-dropping experiment with the Institute’s latest publication: “The New American Dictionary: Fear/Security Edition”. Over four days, members of the Institute and the public will “shopdrop” 150 copies of the
dictionary into book stores, public libraries, schools and museum shops in spots of high-visibility. Each expedition will become a micro-forum for conversation about war, U.S. foreign policy and the new security regulations on thedomestic front. Ideally, the distribution of these books will provoke many micro-confusions and conversations. ie: if someone tries to purchase or checkout the book, the computers won’t know what to do with it. Perhaps others will simply take the book. Perhaps they will get caught for “shoplifting”. We hope these small events will instigate conversation about the book’s provenance, its content, and how it became inserted into a Canadian place of books. We hope that the book fosters creative thinking about dissent and increased awareness of the role that language plays in shaping our public spaces and public culture. The book will be on sale at the WF gallery (for $13USD), but free if you can shoplift it from somewhere else.
